Education as a Mission
The team at Colégio Catarina de Bragança plans, monitors, evaluates and continually reflects on the relationship between students and educational practices. We work collaboratively for children’s education. Together we share and question new “paths” to ensure attentive and individualised practice, respecting the unique characteristics of each child and promoting their global development.
Active and Participative Methodologies
Our teaching-learning process is structured in the Reggio Emilia approach and the Modern School Movement. The Reggio Emilia approach maintains that each human being has, from birth, a unique potential that develops through interaction with other children, adults and the physical, social and even virtual world. Reggio´s practices highlight the importance of learning processes, in which the child learns in a real and meaningful way through a pedagogy of listening. At Colégio Catarina de Bragança, this holistic vision is encouraged with the place offered to children to participate and reflect on their projects, in an atmosphere of dialogue and collaboration with peers. The Modern School Movement inspires our pedagogical practices in the organisation of educational time, cooperation, democracy and sociomoral debate, with an emphasis on activities such as assemblies.

Nursery
With curiosity and freedom, I explore the natural environment around me and build real learning
At Colégio Catarina de Bragança, Nursery plays an essential role in the care and development of babies and toddlers. In addition to ensuring safety and meeting the primary needs of protection and care, it offers a pedagogical project that promotes the child’s integral development, with a high-quality, carefully planned organisation of places and time.
The pedagogical practices at Nursery Catarina de Bragança combine proposals, interactions and routines that promote the child’s learning and integral development, with a focus on their physical and emotional well-being.
The Nursery areas were redesigned taking inspiration from 20 years of experience and the Reggio Emilia approach. They are welcoming, organic and dynamic environments, similar to a home, designed to encourage the autonomy of babies and toddlers, allowing free movement and easy access to materials. Natural materials and loose parts predominate, promoting an ecological and sustainable practice. The classrooms are flexible, with specific areas for symbolic games, art, construction and activities linked to nature, reinforcing the connection with the real world. Natural light is maximised, creating a pleasant and welcoming environment, which promotes well-being and concentration.

Primary School
I explore new paths, discover solutions and work with other people, in a place that values active and fluid learning
At Colégio Catarina de Bragança we believe in educating complete citizens prepared for the future. Inspired by international references, we promote the development of children who, in addition to acquiring knowledge, know how to apply them, solve problems, work as a team, are proficient in different languages and express artistic and aesthetic sensitivity. We promote autonomy, well-being and environmental responsibility, educating conscious, creative and participatory citizens.
We reflect and reject the idea of a rigid curriculum. Subjects are not isolated, nor is learning limited to times measured to the minute. We believe that knowledge is built and, therefore, curricular articulation and interdisciplinarity are a fundamental pillar in our school.
In primary School, students experience phonological awareness, reading, writing, Math, English and expressions on a daily basis. From an early age, we cultivate practices of cooperation and solidarity, present both in the classroom and in the hearts of children. Colégio Catarina de Bragança is, above all, a school of friends.
We maintain in a consolidated way the instruments for piloting the Modern School Movement in organising routines, with emphasis on the Class Diary. We value the Cooperation Council, a place of excellence to coordinate group interactions.
The Primary School areas have been rethought following the same logic as the Nursery and Preschool areas, adapted to the specific needs and skills of this age group. The team has been working so that, since the 1st year, the classrooms are dynamic and participatory environments, designed to reduce excessive sitting time.
The spaces are flexible, with diverse furniture and areas, which encourage natural movement, collaboration and experimentation. Areas dedicated to group work, practical exploration, reading and even moments of rest are fundamental to our project. These environments promote fluid learning, awakening curiosity, creativity and the ability to solve problems. They also prepare students for future skills, such as critical thinking, teamwork and adaptability, essential for emerging careers.

Preschool
The Light, materials and ideas are my allies, in a place where I learn, discover and grow freely
At the age of 3, children begin Preschool, where curiosity and natural doubts come to the fore. From this stage until the age of 10, we use the Project Work methodology, which encourages children’s curious and exploratory spirit. This approach allows you to develop activities and projects that answer your questions and interests, promoting meaningful and engaging learning.
The Preschool areas were carefully designed based on 20 years of experience and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, constituting ideal environments for pedagogical practice. Preschool rooms are regularly adapted to meet children’s needs and interests. Designed to be welcoming and stimulating, they promote autonomy and creativity, functioning as the third educator, in partnership with educators and the school community.
The areas are spacious, illuminated by natural light from large windows that connect children to the outside environment. Furniture and materials are intentionally arranged, with areas dedicated to art, reading, games, science, and construction. As in the Nursery, natural materials predominate, such as wood, stones and fabrics, as well as loose parts, which stimulate children’s creativity and intellectual capacity.
The environments promote an atmosphere of active participation, collaboration and free exploration, encouraging children to interact autonomously with spaces and materials. This approach promotes meaningful learning and skill development. Students are also involved in looking after the spaces, assuming co-responsibility for their organisation and preservation.

Portuguese as a Non-native Language
The non-native Portuguese language students benefit from the assessment and support of a Portuguese teacher, who specialises in non-native Portuguese language teaching. This measure will help these students to gain an equal level of skills within the Portuguese curriculum in order to achieve educational success, facilitating their adequate inclusion in the Portuguese education system and in the school.
